The Financial Dispute Resolution (FDR) hearing is a potentially productive day in the court process. It is usually held in person at court, though some regions now conduct them via secure video link.

By this stage, both parties must have provided full and frank financial disclosure and answered outstanding questions. The judge will have reviewed the Case Summary (Form ES1) and your detailed Summary of Finances (Form ES2), noting exactly where your asset valuations disagree.

The primary goal of this hearing is to narrow the issues and encourage a final settlement—in fact, reaching a settlement is paramount for the judge. This is the first time an independent judge will be brutally honest, focusing entirely on the core points of your dispute to stop both sides from sliding into an incredibly expensive Final Hearing.

During this day, the judge will give a clear indication of what a fair outcome looks like. I will help you clarify the judge's role, map out your negotiation boundaries, and guide you on exactly how to remain calm, focused, and professional when the core issues are laid bare.
